Investigation on Canine Parvovirus infection in dogs at the veterinary clinics in Vinh Long city
Abstract
The study was carried out in 431 dogs at age from 2 to 6 months old, that were brought to
the Veterinary clinic in Vinh Long city for examination and treatment. The clinical diagnosis,
epidemiological investigation and rapid test with Canine Parvovirus Antigen test kit were
performed. The results showed that there were 127 cases of the gastrointestinal tract disorder
(29.47%), of which 28 cases were positive with Canine Parvovirus, accounting for 22.05% of the
total number of gastrointestinal disease cases. The incidence of dogs with Canine parvovirus
was significantly decreased by age groups: The highest infection rate of dog at age group from
2 to ≤3 months old was 56.52%, followed by 3 to ≤4 months old (21.95%), 4 to ≤5 months old
(11.11%), and the lowest in the age group from 5 to ≤6 months old (7.41%). There was no
statistically significant difference on the infection rate between male and female or indigenous
and exotic dogs. The studied results also showed that the infection rate of the vaccinated dogs
was much lower than the unvaccinated dogs, with the rate of 4.00% and 33.77%, respectively.
The typical clinic symptoms of the disease were foul smelling and bloody stools.
