Situation of ectoparasite infestation rate in dogs in Tra Vinh province

Abstract

The study “Situation of ectoparasite infestation rate in dogs in Tra Vinh province” was implemented in 2019. A total of 519 dogs at 3 districts Tra Cu, Cau Ngang, Chau Thanh and Tra Vinh city, Tra Vinh province were examined to determine the rate of dog infected with ectoparasite. The rate of dog infected with ectoparasitic in Tra Vinh was 51.06%, the highest infection of dog was in Tra Cu district (58.56%), followed by Chau Thanh and Cau Ngang districts (52.07% and 49.37%, respectively) and the lowest rate was in Tra Vinh city (45.74%). The infection rate of the local, free-grazing dogs (55.32%) and the captive dogs (46.67%) were higher than the exotic, freegrazing dogs (44.54%) and the captive dogs (38.82%). The result of surveying 5 dog age groups showed that with the dog group at the age <6 months, the rate of dog infected with ectoparasite was 45%; from 6 to 12 months, the infection rate was 40.79%; from 12 - 24 months old, the infection rate was 48.28%; from 24 - 36 months old, the infection rate was 55.79% and > 36 months old, the infection rate was 60.28%. Through the species identification, there were 7 ectoparasite species, including: Rhipicephalus sanguineus (23.31%), Boophilus microplus (9.44%), Ctenocephalides canis (19.85%), Ctenocephalides felis felis (5.59%) , Heterodoxus spininger (22.54%), Trichodectes canis (0.96%), Demodex canis (5.01%)
