Lưu dân người Việt đặt chân lên đất Mỹ Tho từ giữa thế kỷ XVII. Đến năm 1679, chúa Nguyễn cho nhóm người Hoa phản Thanh do Dương Ngạn Địch cầm đầu đến đây lưu trú và mở mang thương mại, Mỹ Tho dần dần trở thành một đô thị sầm uất, nơi giao thương cả trong nước và quốc tế. Đến khi thực dân Pháp xâm lược, do nhu cầu khai thác nông sản mà chủ yếu là lúa gạo để xuất khẩu mà Mỹ Tho càng trở thành đầu mối giao thông, trở thành trạm trung chuyển hàng hóa và hành khách từ miền Tây lên Sài Gòn, là nơi giao lưu văn hóa Việt-Hoa-Pháp. Đến nửa sau thế kỷ XX, do giao thông đường bộ phát triển nên vai trò trung chuyển của Mỹ Tho giảm dần. Hiện nay, với các dự án như đường cao tốc Sài Gòn-Trung Lương và dự án khôi phục tuyến đường sắt Sài Gòn-Mỹ Tho, mở ra nhiều triển vọng cho vùng đất đại phố xưa dần lấy lại vị thế của mình.

ABSTRACT

         The Vietnamese immigrants set foot in Mỹ Tho in the mid-17th century. Then in 1679, the Nguyễn Lord permitted a group of Chinese led by Dương Ngạn Địch who rebelled against the Qing Dynasty and fled their country to settle down and start their commercial businesses here. Step by step, Mỹ Tho became a center of thriving business for both domestic and international commercial services. In the times of the French colonialists, due to the demands for rice exports, Mỹ Tho became one of the most important traffic center, a mediation station for passenger and merchandise transportation from the Mekong Delta to Sài Gòn and a site of acculturation among the Vietnamese, Chinese and French cultures. In the latter half of the 20th century, owing to the development of the system of traffic routes, the mediation role of Mỹ Tho in the local traffic lost its importance. At present, projects such as the superhighway connecting Sài Gòn to Trung Lương, and the project for the reconstruction of the railway Sài Gòn-Mỹ Tho, open up a lot of prospects for the old town to regain its old standing.
