Trong nghiên cứu này, tác giả chủ yếu dựa vào những tài liệu chính thức của các triều đại Minh-Thanh, bao gồm sử ký, hội điển, bản đồ... để đánh giá lại quan điểm về cương thổ của Trung Hoa trong những thế kỷ trước. Quan niệm đó không giới hạn trong các tài liệu hành chính mà còn bao gồm cả quan niệm về thiên triều-phiên thuộc và nhất là ý niệm nội địa-hải ngoại đã là nền tảng cho mọi chính sách.

Trong hơn 500 năm của hai triều đại Minh-Thanh, người Trung Hoa hoàn toàn không coi biển cả là một khu vực cần chinh phục, khai thác và chinh phạt, nếu có thì cũng vì lý do phòng thủ hơn là bành trướng. Trách nhiệm tiễu trừ cướp biển, bảo đảm an toàn cho các thương thuyền qua lại trên biển mặc nhiên được người Trung Hoa xem là nhiệm vụ của các nước mà họ gọi là phiên thuộc.

Chỉ đến khi Thanh triều bị lật đổ, chính quyền Trung Hoa lợi dụng thời cơ hỗn loạn sau thế chiến thứ hai, trong vai trò tiếp thu lãnh thổ và giải giáp quân đội Nhật Bản để lấn chiếm nhiều khu vực đất liền và hải phận trước đây ở ngoài tầm kiểm soát của họ.

ABSTRACT

In this study, the author, mainly basing on the official documents of the two dynasties Ming and Yuan, history, anthologies, maps... reviews the Chinese conception of their territory in the past centuries. Such a conception was not only presented in administrative documents, but it was also expressed in their concepts of the relationship between the central court and its vassals and above all those concepts of national and foreign land. These concepts proved to be the foundation for all the national policies.

For more than 500 years when the two dynasties Ming and Yuan reigned China, the Chinese never held the sea as an aim for their invasion, exploitation and punitive expeditions. Or if there was any military activities here, they were mainly for defensive rather than invasive purposes. Also it went without saying that to get rid of pirates for the protection of commercial ships sailing at sea was the duties of the vassals.

Only when the Yuan dynasty fell, the new government of China with their role to take over the territory of the nation as well as disarm the Japanese forces, imposing upon the then chaotic situation, encroached upon areas of land and sea that prior to the event did not belong to them.
