Qua bài dụ Tự biếm được ban hành năm 1876, vua Tự Đức bày tỏ với quốc dân về tội lỗi và nỗi vô vọng của mình trong việc để mất sáu tỉnh Nam Kỳ vào tay thực dân Pháp và về tương lai của đất nước trước họa ngoại xâm, đồng thời nhà vua cũng tự đề nghị cách trừng phạt mình thật nghiêm khắc. Hiếm có một vị quân vương đang tại vị lại tự kết tội mình một cách thành khẩn như thế. Cũng khó tìm một đấng quân vương thứ hai dám bày tỏ nỗi vô vọng của mình một cách can đảm và thiết tha đến thế.

Đọc lại bài dụ Tự biếm cùng một số lời châu phê (trích từ châu bản triều Nguyễn) của vua Tự Đức sẽ giúp chúng ta hiểu rõ hơn về nhân cách của một nhân vật phải gánh chịu trách nhiệm về việc để mất nước vào tay thực dân Pháp.

ABSTRACT

In his self-criticizing statement issued in 1876, King Tự Đức confesses to his fault and despondence regarding the loss of the six provinces of the South to the French colonialists, as well as the lamentable future of the nation in the face of foreign invasions. He also suggests self-imposed severe punishment for himself. One would hardly find another emperor still in power to confess to his own shortcomings so frankly. One would hardly find another king to express his despondence so boldly and emotionally either.

Rereading the king’s article Tự biếm [Self-criticizing Statement] and some of his personal comments on the court’s official papers (issued in “Châu bản triểu Nguyễn” [Record of Royal Documents of the Nguyễn Dynasty], we will have a chance to understand better the national personage who had to shoulder the responsibility for the loss of the nation to the French colonialists.
