Nghiên cứu văn hóa Cao Đài đòi hỏi nghiên cứu liên ngành. Có thể nghiên cứu văn hóa Cao Đài ở từng thời kỳ (thời kỳ khai Đạo, phát triển, phân hóa, vận động thống nhất, sau chiến tranh...), hay ở từng khu vực dân cư (thành thị, nông thôn, trong nước, ngoài nước…), v.v...
Cần cho thấy các mối liên hệ giữa văn hóa dân tộc với văn hóa đạo đức, giữa dân tộc Việt Nam và các dân tộc khác trên thế giới, giữa đạo Cao Đài với các tôn giáo khác.
Cần nhận diện bản sắc văn hóa Cao Đài. Bản sắc này gồm có phần chung và phần riêng.
Phần chung có ba thuộc tính: (1) Truyền thống, là hài hòa với văn hóa dân tộc; (2) Phổ biến, là hài hòa với văn hóa đạo đức của cả nhân loại; (3) Kế thừa, là chắt lọc một phần văn hóa các tôn giáo khác.
Phần riêng gồm những nét độc đáo chỉ có ở Cao Đài.
Cần trình bày văn hóa Cao Đài như một dòng chảy liên tục, thấm nhập và xuyên suốt các mặt của đời sống cộng đồng Cao Đài, phản ánh mức độ cao về chân, thiện, mỹ có được do kết quả tu dưỡng và rèn luyện lâu ngày của người tín đồ.
ABSTRACT
Research on the Caodai culture should be an interdisciplinary one. It is possible to research the Caodai culture in terms of periods, for example, its beginnings, development, disunity, reunion movement, post-war period, etc. or in terms of population areas, for example, urban, rural, domestic, foreign ones, etc.
It is necessary to point out various relations, for instance, between the Vietnamese culture and the moral one, between the Vietnamese and other peoples, between Caodaism and other religions.
It is essential to identify the identity of the Caodai culture which includes both general and specific aspects.
Its general aspect has three attributes: (1) Tradition, i.e., the Caodai culture harmonises with the national one; (2) Popularity, i.e., it harmonises with the mankind’s culture and morality. (3) Continuity, i.e., it selects the choicest parts from the cultures of other religions.
Its specific aspect is comprised of unique characteristics of Caodaism.
The Caodai culture should be described as a continuous flow which permeates all aspects of the Caodai community’s life, reflecting a high level of truth, goodness, and beauty resulting from its followers’ long spiritual cultivation.
