Ghe bầu miền Trung có nhiều nét tương đồng với thuyền prao (hay prau) của Mã Lai, từ tên gọi đến hình dáng và cấu trúc. Ngoài ra, nó còn tiếp thu một số chi tiết kỹ thuật của thuyền buồm đông Địa Trung Hải, tây Ấn Độ Dương và nam Trung Hoa. Đó là kết quả trực tiếp của quá trình giao lưu kinh tế, văn hóa Việt-Chăm, của kỹ thuật đóng ghe cổ truyền Việt và kỹ thuật đóng thuyền Chăm.

Trong lịch sử, ghe bầu đóng vai trò rất quan trọng cả về quân sự, kinh tế và văn hóa. Trong kinh tế, nó là phương tiện giao thương chủ yếu giữa các vùng miền trong cả nước và sang tận nước ngoài, hình thành nên nghề buôn cận duyên. Ghe bầu còn là phương tiện góp phần vào việc chuyển tải những giá trị văn hóa giữa các vùng miền trong cả nước. Qua đây, ta thấy có cả một “dòng văn hóa ghe bầu” dịch chuyển từ Trung Bộ vào đến Nam Bộ trong dòng chảy lịch sử văn hóa Việt Nam trên cả hai phương diện, văn hóa vật thể và văn hóa phi vật thể. Đây là một hiện tượng văn hóa-lịch sử độc đáo, rất cần được quan tâm nghiên cứu theo hướng tiếp cận đa diện và chuyên sâu.

ABSTRACT

The wooden barge "ghe bầu" used by the people in Central Vietnam is similar to the boat called prao (or prau) of Malaysia as regards their names, shape and structure. Besides, "ghe bầu" also assimilates technical details of the sailing boats used in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, western Indian Sea and South China Sea, of which Chinese influence are vaguer than the other traits. This is the direct result of Viet-Champa economic and cultural exchanges. To put it more concretely, it came from the mixture of the Vietnamese and the Chàm techniques for boat building.

In history, "ghe bầu" played an important part in all military, economic and cultural activities of the nation: As to economy the boat was the key means of transport for the commerce between the different parts of the country, which helped build up the coastal commercial activities, as well as between the nation and the other foreign lands. "Ghe bầu" also contributed to the disemination of cultural values to every part of the nation. We can say "ghe bầu" symbolizes a current of culture, "the culture of ghe bầu" which extended from Central Vietnam to the South in the historic southward movement of the national culture - This is to be said of both tangible and intangible aspects - This is a distinctive cultural and historical phenomenon which definitely needs to be studied through multi-field and profound research.
