  • Nguyễn Thiện Giáp

Abstract

This paper introduces N. Chomsky’s generative grammar. It reviews the formation,  object and targets of  that grammar. According to N. Chomsky’s idea, competence but not utterance is object of his linguisics. Chomskyan linguistics analyses syntactic structures of language in order to build a grammar representing human’s competence. It is called generative grammar that studies grammar as a body of knowledge possessed by language users. Based on utterance, genenerative grammar studies and illustrates language users’ innate knowledge.
