Abstract

This paper deals with reduplications in some Nom texts in the old or medieval

Vietnamese, eg. cành (a branch) – cành cành (branches)...Followings are what we have found from the analysis of data. Most of reduplications here are verbal ones, noun reduplications are fewer than these. The reduplications of other parts of speech are very few. Some reduplications strictly correspond on a one - to - one basis with Chinese reduplications, eg. mịt (dark. Vietnamese) = HÔN (dark. Sino Vietnamese). mịt mịt (darker/ darkest) = HÔN HÔN (darker/ darkest). Reason for this should be continued to discuss. Reduplications can have the following meanings: a) plural meaning of nouns or b) cyclic frequentative reduplication of acts or states denoted by verbs or c) high or low level, strong or week strength of acts or states denoted by verbs. Meanings a) and b) are permanent ones of these reduplications. They should be considered grammatical meanings. Reduplication is a grammatical manner for their implementation. Semantic feature c) is nonpermanent one due to its dependence on each reduplication. That is why it is lexical meaning. Those reduplications had been formed in the medieval or old Vietnamese or in the earlier period. Phonetically, many   of them can be more or less changed, then be naturally considered reduplicatives
