Subjectification and Objectification Modality in English and Vietnamese Social Science Texts

Abstract
This paper intends to apply the models of Cognitive Grammar to investigate the lexicogrammatical devices expressing subjectification and objectification modality in English and Vietnamese social science texts. By analyzing a corpus of 62 English papers (consisting of 400 000 words) and a corpus of 89 Vietnamese texts (consisting of 400 000 words), the study aims at providing thefrequencies of modal expressions in both English and Vietnamese and finding out the similarities and differences between English and Vietnamese in expressing modality.
