The formation of space movement structure vào Nam from the meaning creation perspective of cognitive activities

The paper is based on the argumentpresented in my Doctoral Dissertation entiled “Words expressing moving directions in contemporary Vietnamese” defended in 1985 at Humboldt University(Germany). The meanings of VAO Nam have developed from the meanings of VAO and Nam. However, this processof the structural meaning creation can not be seperated from the interrelationshipsbetween language, thought and intergrationof the perception of the real world into language. Methodologically, it is necessaryto combine both the retrospective diachronyand the optimal synchrony perspectivesin studying the process of formation ofspace movement structure vào Nam.

The Vietnamese people's perception of the world as reflected in the nominations of hypotactic compound words

The nomination of things and phenomena in a language clearly reflects the thought and thecutural characteristics of the community using it. The analysis of the structures of hypotactic compound words shows that the features of individualization have been selected depending on each group of things. There is not a common list of features for all categories of things. Besides, the role and frequency of characteristics used to individualize various things differ for different categories. The differences in distinctive elements in nomination occur not only among languages but also within each language, among categories of things. Each category of things has its own list of distinctive elements. Vietnamese dataalso show that metaphor occurs not only at the level of phonemes which play a differentiating role of things and phenomena but also at the level of words. This fact indicates that metaphor cannot only change the meaning of given sounds but also transform phrases into words in nominations.

The conceptual metaphor of gold in Vietnamese from the source domain perspective

This paper approaches the concept of gold from the source domain perspective. In the construction of the concept of gold in the source domain, the characteristic of "preciousness" is the focal meaning, from which it can map on to two opposite categories: "valuable thing" and "sex stimulating thing". With the construction "A IS B", some conceptual metaphors of gold are built on the basis of human bodily experiences in interactions with the world. The connotation and linguistic expressions reflecting us age contexts of gold show that the conceptual metaphor of gold is real.

Famous joyful sayings are funny and humorous which reflect our life full of happiness and sorrows, the good and the evils. They reflect our life witha positive outlook. In terms of argumentation, the implications of famous joyful sayings could be presented in any forms of argumentation: definitions, comparison, uses of symmetrical and opposition words, etc. This feature has made the sayings joyful and unforgetable. The combination between brief, clear presentation and the special features has enabled famous joyful sayings to bring about not only a completely new, humorous but also logical vision in whatever way they can be explained.

Cặp thoại in the teaching conversations in Vietnamese (A case study of lower high school teaching conversations)

Cap thoai is an important unit of the conversation structure. It is the smallestunit which reflects the interactive relationship between the speaker and the listener. In Vietnamese linguistics, cap thoai could be used to reflect two different theories: either as an adjacency pair or as an exchange. In teaching conversations, the use of cặp thoại as an adjacency pair will show the close relationship between the two moves and the use of cap thoai as an exchange will show the close relationship between the moves inside and outside of cap thoai. The anaysis of data shows that a teaching exchange is a conversation unit which is composed of at least twomoves. This means that it can coincides with one or more adjacent pairs. Teaching conversations may have many different types of exchanges but the three moves exchangeis the most typical.

The exchange structures and the power factor in the Vietnamese courtroom interaction

From the points of view of British discourse analysis, the characteristics of power through seven exchange structures belonging to three groups in Vietnamese courtroom discourse are studied: (i) in the structures of the I, I-R, I-Ib-Ir-R and I-R-Ir-Rr which express an irreversibl e and direct power;(ii) in the three-step structure I- R- F which shows the power associated with the solidarity; (iii) in the four stepstructure I-R-F/Ib- R which indicates the power of the truth. The i nitial movesin the exchange structures belong exclusively to participants who hold judicial power. The three-step I - R- Fframework of the British discourse analysis in this case is slightly narrow, but still can be applied in a flexible way to draw essential instructions of structural patterns and power for this specific interaction.
