Abstract

The aim of the research paper is to compare the use of passive voice in the
Vietnamese story "Ticket to Chilhood" written by Nguyen Nhat Anh and in the Japanese
version translated by Hiromi Itou and by doing that, the research clarifies the similarities and
differences in the use of passive vocie and in the viewpoint between the author and the
translator when they use the passive voice. The results show that about 70% of the passive
voice used in the original is translated into the Japanese version. However, the number of
passives used in the translation is twice as many as it is used in the original. It is concluded
that the difference in the use of passive voice between the original and the Japanese is
influenced by the viewpoint of the writer and his/her understanding of the context/situation
