Female characters in Vietnamese folk jokes

Abstract

Female characters do not appear much in folk jokes. Although it is small, it is very refined, very characteristic and has many different levels and nuances. Female characters in folk jokes are clearly shown through three themes: laughing at common female habits such as eating junk, sour lemons, and laziness; the initiative in sexual matters and creating power before her husband. Unlike other types of characters, female characters in folk jokes are two-faced. On the one hand, folk stories tell about common shortcomings, but on the other hand - more importantly, folk also implicitly support female characters for their legitimate and humane rights of equal rights for men and women. the right to live with fleshly needs. Through this, we see the pioneering nature of jokes in the literary flow. This group of jokes also shows the people's generous and supportive view of characters who suffer many injustices and disadvantages in feudal society.
