PARENTAL SPEECH ACTS IN THE PEPPA PIG ENGLISH SERIES

The curent study investigates the parental speech acts in the Peppa Pig English series. The aims are to examine the speech acts in terms of communicative functions, indirectness, and differences between Daddy Pig's and Mummy Pig’s speech acts. The results show that Representatives are the most popular speech acts and that direct speech acts are preferred to the indirect ones. Moreover, although it is a common belief that women talk more than men, and that women prefer indirect speech act while men are more favor of direct, in the Peppa Pig, Daddy Pig makes more speech acts than Mummy Pig does. Daddy Pig also uses more indirect speech acts than Mummy Pig does. The results are expected to give a better insight into the use and interpretation of parental speech acts, and thus to contribute a great deal to teaching, learning, performing, and interpreting speech acts.
