Khmer People’s Labour Migration with Hunger Eradication and Poverty Reduction in Tinh Bien Town, An Giang Province
Abstract
Since around 2010, to address the problem of hunger and poverty and diversify livelihoods, labour migration has become a movement within the Khmer community in Tinh Bien Town, An Giang Province. Alongside cross-border labour migration, the movement towards major cities and inland industrial centres to seek employment has emerged as a new livelihood strategy for the Khmer people here. Although certain limitations persist, this strategy has swiftly demonstrated its effectiveness in tackling employment issues, enhancing income, improving living standards, and thereby contributing substantially to poverty alleviation efforts in the locality. Based on fieldwork findings and prior scholarly research, this article clarifies the role of labour migration in hunger eradication and poverty reduction in the Khmer community in Tinh Bien Town, An Giang Province in recent years.
