THE CURRENT STATE OF STUDENTS SELF-LEARNING FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND PROPOSING SOLUTIONS

Among the factors such as learners, teachers, curriculum and teaching methods, learners play
the most important role in any learning process. In other words, learners who want to succeed in the
learning process need to be responsible for their own learning. For learners, especially those learning
English as a foreign language, initiative in learning plays an important role. Therefore, teachers need to
promote learners’ autonomy in English classes in general and English self-study hours in particular. The
article discusses the concepts of autonomy in learning, the difficulties that students often encounter in
foreign language classes where learners are independent in the learning process. In addition, the article
also offers some solutions to promote autonomy in learning English.
