ABSTRACT
In teaching English grammar, there is a view that focusing on a predetermined grammatical structure
will not lead to effective learning and that grammar should only be taught at a time when structure is
needed while perform a communication task. Whether grammar should be taught separately or integrated
into communicative activities is still debated by linguists, methodologists and language teachers. Deciding
on the most appropriate approach to effectively teach grammar is always a challenge for language teachers.
The article presents the author’s views on this issue in teaching English at Hanoi University of Natural
Resources and Environment.
