Evaluation of alcohol use rate after 3 months of hospital discharge in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis with gastrointestinal bleeding

Abstract

A longitudinal descriptive study on 134 alcoholic cirrhosis patients with GI bleeding at the Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Center - Bach Mai Hospital from August 2020 to August 2021 with the aim of determining the prevalence of alcohol use after 3 months of discharge from the hospital, recommendations for treatment interventions and advice on prevention of alcohol reuse after discharge were given. The study results showed that the percentage of patients still using alcohol 3 months after discharge from the hospital is 67.2%. The type of alcohol used by alcoholics is white wine and homemade wine (72.2%). The average daily alcohol intake of the study population was 11.53 ±7.23 standard alcohol units. The mean time to drinking again of the study group was 1.03 ± 0.53 months. Thus, the percentage of alcoholic cirrhosis patients with GI bleeding who still use alcohol after discharge from the hospital is very high, the average amount of alcohol consumed during the day is very large, much higher than the level of safe alcohol use for health established by the World Health Organization recommendations show an alarming problem with alcohol use and alcohol relapse in our country today. The time the subjects drank alcohol returned to concentration within a period of 1 month after discharge, so during this time, patients should receive more special attention and advice in counseling on the harmful effects of alcohol and alcohol addiction treatment after hospital discharge.
