Abstract: Since the beginning of the Đoi Moi (Renovation) process in 1986, the Communist Party of Vietnam has consistently emphasized the importance of values and counter-values in Vietnamese culture whenever addressing the development of an advanced culture imbued with national identity. The Party has always been aware that the values in Vietnamese culture are the achievements of thousands of years of creative labor and the resilient struggle to build and defend the nation by the Vietnamese ethnic communities. These values also reflect the outcome of cultural exchange and the assimilation of many values from global civilizations. Cultural values are the lifeblood that nourishes successive generations throughout the nation's historical development. These include the outstanding values expressed in creative labor and the determined efforts to establish and protect the country. They also include moral values reflected in a way of life where individuals devote their entire creative capacity to the cause of nation-building and defense. These values are intrinsically linked to the human ability to transform nature, build society, and cultivate personal character. However, alongside these values, Vietnamese culture also contains certain counter-values - inevitable costs that come with development. Values and counter-values are constantly in conflict, creating a powerful driving force for sustainable development. This article focuses on analyzing these positive and negative (or counter) aspects of Vietnamese culture.

Keywords: Vietnamese culture, cultural values, counter-values.
