COMBINING ARCGIS AND GOOGLE SKETCHUP TO BUILD 3D MODELS OF THAI NGUYEN UNIVERSITY - LAO CAI CAMPUS

Abstract

Along with the development of modern science and technology and the increasing demand for infrastructure management, the application of GIS and maps in all industries and fields is very necessary. However, currently only 2D maps which do not provide specific and visual space have been used for management. Thai Nguyen University - Lao Cai Campus is a new higher education unit established in 2015; the mission of building facilities for school development is always concerned. Therefore, building a 3D model to manage the construction planning of the campus is an important task. In this article, the authors used a combination of ArcGIS and Google Sketchup to build a 3D model of the campus. The research evaluated the input data source to build the 3D database; at the same time, building a map of the current land use of the campus on ArcGIS; using Google Sketchup to build 3D models of the campus's architectural objects. Finally, ArcGIS and Google Sketchup were combined to complete building a 3D model of Thai Nguyen University - Lao Cai campus. The research results provide a visual view of the campus's spatial landscape architecture to propose directions to build and develop the campus.
