LANGUAGE BARRIERS OF ETHNIC MINORITY SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THAI NGUYEN PROVINCE WHEN IMPLEMENTING THE GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM 2018
Abstract
The article aims to understand the current situation and propose some solutions to overcome the language barriers for secondary school students of ethnic minorities in Thai Nguyen province when implementing the General Education Program 2018. The main research methods used are the survey, quantitative and qualitative analyses. The survey results show that secondary school students from ethnic minorities in Thai Nguyen province still have certain limitations in language ability in all four skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening, in which writing is the worst skill. The students’ language barriers were identified as their starting point of low Vietnamese language ability; student psychology is often passive, inflexible, and uncreative; their Vietnamese communication and application environment is still limited. Based on the current situation, a number of solutions have been proposed by the article to help ethnic minority secondary school students overcome the language barriers, especially before the new requirements of the General Education Program 2018.
