Assessment of the situation of responding and minimizing damage by impacts of flooding and salinization on military operations in Mekong Delta

Abstract

 Flooding and saltwater intrusion is taking place in 13 provinces of the Mekong Delta, negatively affecting military activities and military constructions of the military zone. The author has conducted a survey, collected questionnaires, and surveyed the current status of saltwater intrusion/inundation and the situation of response and damage reduction of affected units in the Mekong Delta. The survey results show that most of the units are heavily affected by flooding and saline intrusion in 2020 and earlier. At the time of the survey, in 2021-2022, the units have been applying solutions to adapt, respond, and minimize the impact of inundation and saltwater intrusion, thus, the impact of flood/salinization is not as much as it was in the past. The survey results show that the response and mitigation of impacts due to inundation/salinization were effective at the time of the survey compared to previous years.
