MODALITY MARKERS IN VIETNAMESE SENTENCE FRAGMENTS
Keywords
Abstract
A fragment is a sentence with a structural abnormality. Therefore, although it has been mentioned in the works on Vietnamese grammar early, it has not been analyzed and explained convincingly. This paper aims to study sentence fragments from the perspective of modality theory, using the findings of modern linguistics to clarify the syntactic problems that the previous works have not addressed yet. The article identifies the modality markers in Vietnamese sentence fragments, which is the basis for explaining the status and the effect of rhetorical expression in the text of the said sentences.
The research results give a well-founded account of the modal meanings of the Vietnamese fragments, thus opening up directions for applied research on this type of sentence.
