Tóm tắt
Gender prejudice is one of the common types of social prejudice, rooted in actual linguistic communication and reinforced through language, thereby sustaining gender stereotypes and allowing prejudices against both women and men to persist over time in society. These prejudices have significant impacts on individual development. By examining 932 instances of gender-biased expressions found in modern Vietnamese short stories and novels, this article aims to identify utterances reflecting gender prejudice and the common dimensions of prejudice typically directed toward men and women. The research findings indicate that for both genders, prejudices related to personality traits and family roles are the most prominent. The most noticeable and distinct difference between the two genders lies in the dimension of capability and inherent personal value. While this aspect is especially emphasized in relation to women, it tends to be underestimated or neglected in reference to men. Additionally, men are rarely subjected to age-related prejudice, whereas women are seldom the target of prejudice regarding social roles. These findings have practical significance in raising awareness of gender-prejudiced language, thereby contributing to the limitation, reduction, and eventual elimination of such utterances in communication. This is a highly practical contribution to the promotion of gender equality.
