Abstract

Background: Hypertension, a chronic condition requiring ongoing treatment, presents significant medication adherence challenges for outpatients. Studies globally indicate that adherence rates among hypertensive patients, particularly the elderly, are low. This non-adherence undermines treatment efficacy and increases the risk of complications such as myocardial infarction and stroke. Objective: To evaluate the level of medication adherence among elderly hypertensive outpatients at Hai Phong University Hospital in 2022. Subjects and Methods: The study was cross-sectional, involving direct interviews and prescription collection from 220 outpatients who had been treated for at least three months at Hai Phong University Hospital from 1st July 2022 to 31st December 2022. Data were analyzed using medical statistical methods with SPSS 27.0 software. Results: The overall medication adherence rate was 80.5%, with good and average adherence rates at 40.5% and 40.0%, respectively. Additionally, 75% of patients attended their scheduled follow-up appointments.
