Abstract

Analysis of Direct Medical Costs for Type 2 Diabetes Treatment and Related Factors in Inpatients at the Department of Internal Medicine, Hai Phong Medical University Hospital in 2024

 

ABSTRACT: This study retrospectively analyzed 319 inpatient treatment cost records from the Department of Internal Medicine, Hai Phong Medical University Hospital, collected from January to December 2024. The objective was to examine the direct medical costs of treating type 2 diabetes and identify associated influencing factors. Research method: cross-sectional description. Results: the average cost per hospitalization episode was VND 3,836,407, of which 85.37% was covered by health insurance. Bed charges accounted for the largest proportion of total costs (41.22%). Among the costs for infusion medications, antiparasitic and anti-infective drugs represented the highest expense (42.24%), while insulin and oral hypoglycemic agents accounted for 14.41%. The number of complications and length of hospital stay significantly influenced the total cost. The estimated direct medical cost was modeled as: Total direct cost = 492,975.3 - 12,199.2 * Age + 992,289.2 * Number of complications + 480,600.8 * Length of stay (p<0.05).
