Characteristics of clinical manifestation, endoscopic images and histopathology in patients with ileal diseases at Huu Nghi Viep Tiep Hospital

Abstract

Objective: We aim to study the characteristics of clinical manifestation, endoscopic images and histopathology on patients with ileal diseases at Huu Nghi Viet Tiep Hospital. Patients and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 35 patients ileal diseases out of 5.456 patients undergoing colonoscopy – ileoscopy at Huu Nghi Viet Tiep Hospital from February 2023 to August 2023. Results and conclusions: Among 5.456  patients indicated for colonoscopy  – ileoscopy, the rate of ileal diseases is 0,64%, the male-to-female ratio is 0,59. Age distribution was reported with 45,7% aged below 40, while 54,3% aged 40 or older. Abdominal pain and change in consistency of stool were the major manifestation, about 77,1% patients experienced both symptoms while 20% experienced only abdominal pain and 2,9% reported stool change as solitary symptom. Among patients with abdominal discomfort, 55,9% experienced umbilical pain and 29,4% reported right ileac pain. In terms of stool change, about 35,7% patients had loose stools and 32,1% had loose stools with mucus. During endoscopic examination, the presence of inflammation and ulcer were 82,9% and 17,1%, respectively. Histopathology pattern showed 40% was Crohn's, 57,1% was chronic inflammation and 2,9% was low-grade dysplasia.
