Current knowledge status of mothers regarding the prevention and care of children with simple febrile seizures at the Pediatrics Department – Hai Phong University Hospital in 2025
Abstract
Objective: To assess the level of knowledge among mothers about the prevention and management of children with simple febrile seizures, and to identify some related factors. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 127 mothers with children aged 6 to 60 months receiving treatment at the Pediatrics Department. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and evaluated based on a scoring system. Results: The percentage of mothers with good knowledge was 28.3%, moderate 42.5%, and poor 29.1%. Some topics were relatively well understood, such as correct antipyretic use (82.7%) and thermometer availability (77.2%). However, many mothers still lacked appropriate knowledge of emergency handling: only 59.1% knew to take the child to a medical facility during seizures, 55.9% knew to place the child on their side, and 64.6% knew they would not insert objects into the child’s mouth. Conclusion: It is necessary to strengthen health education and counseling programs at the community level, especially targeting mothers with low education levels or limited access to medical information, to improve knowledge and proper management of febrile seizures in children.
