Abstract
Thường Tân (嘗新) is a ceremony to thank the gods for giving rice. When agriculture still occupied a leading position in the economy, it was a very popular ceremony in villages. The earliest records written in the national language about Thường Tân were a number of books and newspapers in the early 20th century, and until recently, there have still been studies mentioning this ceremony. However, when comparing the above-mentioned records with information in Sino-Vietnamese customary documents, we see many discrepancies. This article use information in Sino-Vietnamese customary documents to study Thường Tân festival and other related festivals in the history according to the following aspects: the time of organization, the relationship between the name of the ceremony and the month in which the ceremony takes place; the concepts of "Thường Tân/Thường Tiên", "Cơm Mới", "Xôi Mới", "Trùng Thập"; the number of times the ceremony takes place in a year, etc., to amend the records of predecessors, helping readers have a more accurate and systematic view of this ceremony.
