Abstract
Out of a total of 1,468 dogs brought to VINPET veterinary center in Ho Chi Minh City for
examination and treatment, there were 79 cases infected with eye diseases, accounting for 5.38%.
In addition, the association factors to the eye disease (such as: dog breeds, gender, age groups),
classification of eye diseases and effective treatment regimens were also surveyed. The studied
result showed that the infection rate of exotic dog breeds was higher than that of the hybrid dogs and
indigenous dog breeds. The prevalence of eye diseases in the male and female dogs was nearly
equal. In general, the rate of eye disease occurred in all age groups, the highest rate was in the
dog group over 10 years old (7.08%) and lowest rate was in the dog group from 5 to 10 years old
(4.88%). The highest percentage of dogs was infected with both eyes and the lowest rate was in
the dogs infected in the left eye only. The infection rate of dogs according to the ophthalmic clinical
lesions accounted for a significant proportion. There were 10 types of eye diseases in dogs recorded
with different rates, such as: eyelid inflammation accounted for the highest rate (21.52%), followed
by uveitis, third eyelid prolapse, and conjunctivitis, keratitis, kerato-conjunctivitis, corneal ulceration,
eye trauma, cataracts, and the lowest rate was glaucoma (1.27%). Treatment efficacy of the eye
diseases with cured cases reached 73.42%, of which, the third eyelid prolapse was cured with the
highest rate (100%), the cured rate of cataracts and glaucoma was 0%.
