The situation of Cherry eye disease in domestic dogs in Thai Nguyen city and treatment measures

Abstract

We conducted an investigation on 1,225 dogs raised in Thai Nguyen city, the investigating
result showed that there were 158 dogs infected with eye diseases, of which the rate of dogs
infected with cherry eye disease accounted for 40.51%. The main infection dog breeds were
Saphiar (57.14%), English Bull (50.00%) and Pekingese - Japanese hybrid (43.48%), other
dog breeds (25.81% to 35.29%). The infection rate of dogs under 2 years old accounted
for the highest (74.47%), the infection rate of dogs over 5 years old was lowest (17.14%).
The incidence was not much different between male and female dogs (male dog: 36.62%,
female dog: 43.68%). Common manifestations in the cherry eye disease dogs were frequent
squinting and tearing, red bumps protruding from the edge of the third eyelid, red eye mucosa,
red eyes, and dogs often raise their paws for rubbing eyes, these manifestations accounted
for 82.81% - 100%. The disease dogs were treated by two surgery methods: removing the
third eyelid gland and sewing the morgan bags with a successful rate was 92.19%, in which,
the successful rate of morgan bag sewing method was 84.38% and the third eyelid gland
resection method was 100%.
