LANGUAGE EDUCATION IN ETHNIC MINORITIES REGIONS OF VIETNAM

Abstract

For a long time, language education and the use of languages in the regions of ethnic groups in Viet Nam has been raised. Up to now it has still been a tough issue. Requirements of language education are to help learners know thoroughly and master both Vietnamese and students’ mother language. It is not only related to cultural diversity and the identity of the ethnic groups but also the concept of self - respect and humanity. In Vietnam, there are some models of language education: a, “Floating” education; b, Teaching - learning “swimming” in Vietnamese before “floating”; c, First, teaching - learning mother language and by mother language of learners, then gradually teaching - learning Vietnamese and by Vietnamese; mother language of learners is taught and learnt as a subject; d, Teaching - learning by only Vietnamese, and mother language of learners is taught and learnt as a subject. For Vietnam, it is best to combine model b with model d.
