Abstract

In fact, the number of continuous monitoring system applications in civil engineering projects has grown significantly. However, these applications have primarily focused on large-scale structures, such as bridges, viaducts, or offshore platforms, and very few cases of heritage building monitoring have been recorded in scientific literature.Considering that natural disasters pose a higher risk to heritage structures- not only from catastrophes but also from the natural degradation of materials-the primary objective of this research is to contribute to the implementation of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems for heritage buildings. This is achieved by outlining the initial steps required to optimize an SHM system, followed by a description of the data processing procedures for a long-term monitoring system. To serve this objective, two practical case studies were examined. This study provides an important contribution to the conservation and restoration of heritage structures, while promoting the early collection of damage data, which can be utilized as a method to mitigate the risk of collapse and implement maintenance techniques for heritage sites
