Son La is the living space of 12 ethnic groups, amongst which the Thai people are the largest (52.3% of province population). Each ethnic group has distinct cultural values and traditions which were constructed and have accumulated over time. Such cultural values have been preserved and passed through generations up to the present. Culture is identified by the Communist Party and the Vietnamese State as a very crucial contribution to socio-economic development in the country. The Party and the State have made many good policies designed to preserve and promote the advantages of traditional ethnic cultures. Such policies have been implemented in practice. This article focuses on analyzing some shortcomings of cultural identity preservation and promotion of the Thai people in Son La. Thereby, the author suggests some specific solutions to current difficulties.
