Culture of Viet People in Foreign Countries: From Cultural Exchange and Acculturation Perspectives
Abstract
Cultural exchange and acculturation is a conception of change and adaptation of the types of ethnic cultures in the course of process of long-term and cross-cultural contacts in many forms among cultures. This writing makes a contribution to examination of change through cultural exchange and acculturation of the Viet people in foreign countries and indicates the opportunities for development as well as threats of gradual loss of their traditional ethnic culture. Based on her research of change of language, religions and beliefs, marriage and family, and cuisine, the author analyses the active expressions and challenges in preservation of ethnic culture among Viet community in foreign countries. Good preservation of aspects of traditional culture in the course of process of cultural exchange is a salient feature of culture of Viet people in foreign countries. However, the preservation of Viet language and traditional culture of young generation in foreign countries has been limited. Therefore, the State should have feasible and effective policies and measures for preservation and bringing into play the valuable cultural traditions and identity for the Viet community in foreign countries.
