The writing presents the classification of family structure and scale of San Diu people in Ninh Lai commune, Son Duong district, Tuyen Quang province from tradition to present time through which indicates the tendency of adaptation and sustainable development of San Diu families in the modern background. In the San Diu villages, there are two family patterns including the nuclear family containing two generations (making up majority) and the extended family consisting of three or four generations. The number of children of a couple has reduced in comparison with the past, normally is two to three children instead of three to five children as in the past. There are many factors affecting the change of family patterns and scale of San Diu people of which mainly the relevant policies of the Vietnamese Communist Party and government, education of San Diu people and household economic development.
