This article examines historical relationships between the Viet and the Cham ethnic groups. The Viet-Cham cultural exchanges occurred over many centuries and are reflected not only in historical materials written by the Imperial court but are in the distinctive names on historical monuments, local legends, and cultural vestiges that are stand in contrast to local place names. In the old capital of the Great Viet, Thang Long is where many traces of Cham cultural exchanges are concentrated.
