This paper is a literature review on the use of old Tay words in Hanoi and explores the origin and meaning of these words and will be further developed in the future. The idea of the paper began from a student’s question about a word referring to the rice field used by the people in Soc Son District of Hanoi, which is relatively similar to the word used by the Thai ethnic group. In the course of the author’s research into the historical origins of the old Tay word, he put together his notes and findings in this article. The author is of the Thai ethnic group living in Hanoi. As a result of his findings, the author has a wide knowledge of the old Tay - Thai place names around Hanoi.
