Using methods and results of researches in linguistics, archeology, and ethnology in Vietnam and in the world for nearly a century, the article reaffirms that the Vietnamese and the Muong originated from the same root in the Lac Viet block. Along with the Tay, a part of the Nung and the ancient Thai (Au Viet), they are the native inhabitants, the host in North Vietnam, who created uninterrupted cultures marked by a period of national construction represented by the culmination of the brilliant Dong Son culture. They are not two different ethnic groups originated from Southern China as the book on “Origins of the Vietnamese and Muong People” explained. This article also clarifies the origin of the concept “Hung Vuong” and the substance of the legend on “Lac Long Quan and Au Co Produce Bach Viet.” This article contributes to the discussion of contemporary research methodology in ethnic studies.
