Lao Cai is a mountainous border province with many ethnic groups residing in different places, forming different local groups. Ethnic studies in Lao Cai province are of concern to many scientists. In this article, the author provides an overview of ethnic research in Lao Cai province before 1980, and analyzes, counts, and introduces the situation of ethnic studies in Lao Cai province from 1980 to present. In particular, he focuses on the introduction of the ethnography, and assesses the achievements and limitations of ethnic studies in Lao Cai.
