Ethnic studies in the United States is a new interdisciplinary study, which emerged in the second half of the 20th century, when ethnic conflicts became more critical there. American ethnic studies pay more attention to the critical analysis of the nature of the multiethnic society of the United States, focusing on ethnic groups and races living within the United States, while ethnology tends to continue its long colonial tradition of working on non-European and American ethnic groups and races in developing societies of Asia, Africa and Latin America. As far as methodologies are concerned, American ethnic studies are based on interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches with practical orientations, whereas ethnology is a specialized discipline, often seen as part of cultural anthropology with broader interests in cultures and societies of human being
