This article provides information on changes in economic activities of the Tho ethnic group in Nghe An province since the implementation of the economic reform, most notably replacing wet-rice and upland rice with sugarcane for sugar mills; in the intensification of livestock production towards goods and extension of services; working away in the country and abroad; significant improvement of family life. However, this transition takes place mainly in the lowland groups. Along with the economic changes come social transformation, notably the recovery of the family and family relationships, which forms new groups of labours, new social institutions, and positively influences the economic development and social management.
