The authors point out the features of the border communes of Thanh Hoa province: there are multi-ethnic groups with six main groups of Thai, Muong, Hmong, Dao and Kho-mu living together in the same commune; agro-forestry is a dominant economic activity. This fact creates good conditions for the local ethnic groups to communicate and share with as well as learn from each other. In addition, it helps to maintain the cultural exchanges inside and outside the communities, and especially have a marriage of different ethnic groups that create a strong attachment of one ethnic group to another. In addition, ethnic solidarity is reinforced through the process of providing mutual help in production and life and that of ensuring the social and national security. However, it also creates challenge to preserving ethnic identity.
