Tóm tắt
The paper presents a number of provisions for marriage (marriage age, rights of marriage decision, and selection of the matchmaker); as well as the steps and basic etiquette for a wedding of the Tay Deng in Sam To district, Hua Phan province, Lao-PDR. This article shows that the traditional marriage and wedding of the Tay Deng clearly is of patriarchal nature, but also inherits the remnants of matriarchy, as indicated in the in-law, the wedding party at the bride’s side prior to the wedding party at the groom’s side, and the important roles of the uncle and aunt. The paper also describes community relations, as well as family and village assistance amongst the Tay Deng in organizing weddings, as well as in changes to a current wedding ceremony.
