Tóm tắt
The author defines that kinship relations play an important role in society because they are the most prominent ones in social relations and exert great impacts on political, economic, cultural and ethnic relations. They are the core social institutions of each ethnic group around which the group is united and unified. This paper aims at: reviewing some fundamental issues of kinship such as kinship terminology system; methodology of recording kinship, kinship system analysis and kinship diagrams; examining and analyzing kinship terminology and diagrams of the Khmer in Southern Vietnam; identifying characteristics of the people’s kinship system which are not unilineal (e.g. matrilineal or patrilineal) but indiscriminate lineages. The indiscrimination reveals the fact that the Khmer’s kinship system includes those who have a blood relationship with ego on both sides of ego’s mother and father and those who have marital relationship with the both sides. Therefore, the range of the system is quite wide but loose and not as tight as other unilineages. It creates neither aged lineage heritage tradition with the heads of lineages through time nor lineage assets and worship halls.
