Hmong living in Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province have an extensive tradition of horse breeding. The horse plays an important role in the Hmong’s production and daily life. Horses are important in the mundane realm of everyday household use such as transporting goods and providing services, and they occupy a unique spiritual and cultural place in Hmong customs and beliefs. Hmong ethno-equestrian knowledge includes horse selection, breeding and healthcare. In the high mountains horses are well suited to the lifestyle of Hmong.
