Based on various available literature and documents relating to poverty and food security, the author presented definition of food security, approaches to food security, poverty reduction and food security in Vietnam and Lao PDR. The desk study shows that although the issue of food security has received special attention from the world since the 1970s, food security currently remains a difficult problem for many countries. Economic growth and globalization do not automatically guarantee food security throughout the world, particularly in developing and low-income countries, including Vietnam and Laos. Although Vietnam is the second largest rice exporter in the world, food shortage is relatively widespread in many mountainous areas of the country, especially in ethnic minority areas. A similar situation exists in ethnic communities of Lao PDR.
