A multidisciplinary research group of researchers was organized to study shifting cultivation and food security of minority people in the highlands of Northern Vietnam. A case study was conducted in two villages of Thai and Khmu ethnic groups in Ky Son district, Nghe An province in January 2007. Results of the study show that income sources in shifting cultivation plays a very important role in ensuring food security for these ethnic minorities. Food security depends on the way people exploit natural resources. The study reveals the close relationship between Thai and Khmu culture and the environment. Both cultures have a strong understanding of their environemt and continues to use it sustainably
