Tóm tắt

This essay focuses on the micropolitics of therapy management and is organized around two case studies that lead us to consider the social relations of sickness in the context of poverty and social transformation. The two case studies draw upon fieldwork conducted in the Philippines and India. This issue of the Anthropology Review shows the first case conducted in the Philippines. The first case, compiled from edited field notes, is based on participant observation in an impoverished Filipino household. Exposed to an infectious and socially stigmatizing disease by a sick relative, household members are faced with physical risk while obliged by cultural values to extend routine hospitality. This study invites us to examine household dynamics and the issue of entitlement as an important dimension of therapy management.
