The Son La hydroelectric plant has had profound impacts on thousands of people who live on the lakebed. Specifically, many of those who lived on the lakebed were forced to resettle in a different location. Tan Lap is one of the two communes which has been chosen as an example of a resettlement model. Resettlement as a result of implementing the hydroelectric project has led to some problems related to adequate shelter, land use, labor, food security, healthcare and education. Delving into an analysis of positive and negative influences of the resettlement project implemented in Tan Lap commune provides insight into the causes and nature of the social issues in this area. Lessons learned from the Tan Lap example can help better the model of resettlement compensation for improved living quality and a better life for those affected, while still meeting the objectives of the project.
